Project Brief
“How Might We Provide Healthier Food Options for Renters” is the big issue of Human-Centered Design Course. I advanced UX skills through step-by-step training, from interviews to insights, to find out users' pain points, and finally start a healthy journey for renters.
My Role
・User interview/ Competitive analysis/ Flowchart/ Wireframe/ Prototype
・4 members. I am a team leader and lead everyone to complete these tasks because I have work experience in UIUX.
Challenge
Our members are matched by this course. Because it is a side project, we meet in person to hold workshops at every stage, and we also have online meetings to communicate efficiently and reach a consensus within a limited time. That is very important we use many co-working platforms to execute online.
Timeline
Dec. 2020 - Mar. 2021
Design Highlight
When using the APP the first time, by choosing cooking appliances and healthy target settings, the system will recommend suitable recipes for you. It easier for users to meet their needs during using this app.

How We Work
DEFINE /
Who is Renter?
How Might We Provide Healthier Food Options for Renters?
According to secondary data, more than 75% of renters are under the age of 40, roughly divided into two big groups: students and office workers.
Here are the needs for health for two groups from the research:
Student: between money and more healthily, price is the priority.
Office workers: I want to eat healthily, but I always can't reach my goal because it's not convenient in my renting house.
Compared with the two groups who desire healthier food, office workers are more than students.
So, we defined our TA more clearly: 22-35 years old (excluding over 35 years old who have children)

PLAN RESEARCH & CONDUCT INTERVIEW /
What are healthier foods for them?
We built interview guides for 4 parts:
-
Personal details
-
Habits of eating
-
Ideas of health
-
The results of executing healthy plan
After that, we conducted interviews with 12 people and recorded interview detail on miro with card sorting. We summarized 3 main directions about ideas of heathy for renters below.

INSIGHT /
What's difficult they face?
We shared interviewees' stories with team members, and we analyzed 3 key points:
-
Diet-management app is not useful
Users who cook always pay attention to health/ Sometimes record diet
-
Problems in ingredients
Buy too many vegetables one time/ Always cook the same dishes
-
Cook inconvenient
Not many cooking appliances at home/ Depend on mood (too tired)
HOW MIGHT WE /
Turn existing challenges into opportunities for design
We used How might we to create 4 different services:
-
An app teaches you to cook and record your diet fast and easily.
-
Sharing kitchen: the service of providing a place for cooking (including appliances)
-
Cooperate with stores: bring the ingredients for the stores to cook for customers
-
Design instant food: convenient, single-use
SELECT A BEST IDEA /
Think thoroughly by storyboard
After sharing ideas, we evaluated and reviewed the implementation of 4 services.
Then, we selected the first idea” an APP” to move forward with.
Through analyzing the existing diet-management APP and know more about pain points that users faced.
Finally, We visualized a storyboard to image blueprint the new service in different scenarios.

Sara records diet in breakfast by scaning barcode.

At noon, she decides to eat light food. Then, she opens the app and orders a salad, and then import the nutrition data into the App.

In the afternoon, Sara browses the app, and thinks what she want to cook at dinner. She finds the simple dish: curry, and decides to go to the supermarket to buy some ingredients after work.

After buying the ingredients and going home, Sara opens the app and follows steps while cooking. Finally, She finishes a delicious and healthy dinner.
DESIGN /
Clarify the function of the App
-
Information Architecture
Through user stories, we defined IA to clarify framework. This App provides three main functions for renters: Simple Cooking Recipes / Delivery Service / Diet Record.

-
User Flow
We provided three ways to record nutrition data because we expected users to add calories in the most convenient way. Then, we drew the flowchart to double-check all the situations can be satisfied.

-
Wireframe
After confirming the flow, we drew the wireframe to make the interaction between the main pages clearer. It is easier to make sure every page's connection.

-
Design System
We defined the fundamental guideline, and the team members followed the rules easily and co-working creating UI together.

PROTOTYPE /
Mockup & Test

After the testing from users, they have provided us some valuable comments.
IMPLEMENTATION /
Moving forward
We are optimizing continuously user feedback on app, we also discussed initially the business model, which is an important basis for implementation. Through the course, we understand that this is the beginning of the product prototype, and we have long road need to go to the market in the future.

Reflection
It was a special experience for me on a side project. I led the team to complete the human-centered design process and got the certification. I also learned a lot and familiar with every step including identifying key themes, insights, and opportunities for design.
All my members from different filed (finance/ art/ advertising ), we organized our team on the internet, and we never met each other before. It’s so lucky everyone is nice and hard-working on the course.
